Meet Willis

Willis Thompson served as South Ward Alderman for the City of Vicksburg, MS from 2013-2017. During his tenure, notable accomplishments included: restoration of the city’s bond rating, construction of the sports complex, Halls Ferry Park tennis court expansion, Lee Street Pavilion renovation and walking trail, and the 61 South community garden and working trail. He also spearheaded and expanded city’s summer youth job program that created over 150 jobs for the city’s youth. The employee health clinic was created during Thompson’s tenure to make health care more accessible and affordable to employees and their families while lowering the cost to taxpayers under the city’s self-insured plan. Before taking office, he served at city hall for over ten years as an Information Technology (IT) Specialist and as Director of the city’s government access station TV23.

Mr. Thompson’s educational achievements include an associate in applied science degree in Computer Programming Technology, a Bachelor of science in Computer Science, a master’s in business administration degree (MBA), and a master’s in divinity (MDiv) degree.

Willis is married to Dr. Candy Thompson, and they have five children in whom whey are installing values of integrity, hard work, and perseverance. The Thompsons are strong advocates of education and believe that education along with Christian values are important components to their children building a firm foundation in every arena of life. Willis is also a spiritual leader who serves as an elder at Vicksburg Family Life Cathedral Church. He is focused on improving the quality of life for citizens of Vicksburg by improving public safety, being fiscally responsible with taxpayers’ dollars, supporting initiatives for youth, education, and families, repairing and maintaining the city’s aging infrastructure, making wise decisions, forming productive partnerships, and comprehensive planning for the future.
